Welcome to our website

  • We are based in a small rural village, nestled in the hill tops of County Durham.

We are extremely fortunate to be surrounded by open countryside, where we keep and breed a small flock of Shetland sheep, Dexter cows and a variety of poultry, but our main passion is our working gun dogs.

Gunnerdale is owned and run by Deborah Forster who has worked, trained and owned Labrador Retrievers Golden Retrievers and working cocker spaniels for over twenty five years.

  • We spend many weekends from august to February enjoying our local shoots also being members of the grove. Much of our time is spent walking, training, and exercising our dogs.

We are a small licensed kennels and sometimes have puppies available.

Our dogs are all KC registered and have all health checks relevant for their breed, only breeding from quality dogs with kind gentle temperament, true to their breed, ensuring our puppies are suitable for work and family homes.

Cocker Spaniels

Working Cocker Spaniels can be excellent family dogs and superb loyal pets. They are not so big that they bowl children over, but can be very active. Training these dogs to house basics is very easy as they are very intelligent dogs and once your trust has been gained by the dog they will practically do anything you ask. They are friendly, outgoing and their temperament to children is second to none. They take to obedience training well, and enjoy a range of activities, including retrieving, flyball and agility. This breed is very trainable, so long as the owners are gentle as well as firm, since Working Cocker Spaniels are generally very sensitive dogs you should both have a good relationship without unnecessary problems.

Labrador Retrievers

The Labrador Retriever is a type of gun dog. A breed characteristic is webbed paws for swimming, useful for the breed's original purpose of retrieving fishing nets. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog by registered ownership in the UK. Widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities. Typically, Labradors are athletic and love to swim, play catch and retrieve games, are good with young children, elderly, and for protection. Labradors are relatively large, with males typically weighing 29 to 41 kg (64 to 90 lb) and females 25 to 32 kg (55 to 71 lb) although some Labradors weigh significantly more. The majority of the characteristics of this breed, with the exception of colour, are the result of breeding to produce a working retriever.

Golden Retrievers

The Golden Retriever is a medium-sized breed of dog. They were historically developed as gundogs to retrieve shot waterfowl such as ducks and upland game birds during hunting and shooting parties. They were named retriever from their ability to retrieve game undamaged and have an instinctive love of water. Golden retrievers have a dense inner coat that provides them with adequate warmth and a water repellent outer coat that lies flat against their body. The official colour of the breed is the varying shades of gold that are most often seen. These dogs are well suited to suburban or country environments. Although they need lots of outdoor exercise, they should be kept fenced in because of their instincts as hunting dogs.
